Positive BehavioraI Interventions & Supports at SFDS

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports or PBIS is a school- wide approach to support students in the development of positive social behaviors, peer relationships, and a positive self-image. PBIS is a three-tiered system of support based on evidence-based practices to address student needs to facilitate success for the whole child in their academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs.  Tier 1 is the universal support provided for all students and across all settings in the school.  Tier 2 are the interventions for some students who may need additional support. At this level, behavior protocols are informal but based on positive interventions.   Tier 3 is for the few students who may need intensive and individualized support. Formal data collection and behavioral plans are developed and are part of the student’s IEP.

At SFDS, our PBIS slogan is RISE.  RISE reminds our entire school community about our core social values of Respect, Inclusivity, Safety and Equity.

There are countless ways that our RISE values are embedded in our culture at SFDS.  They are evident in interactions with students, staff, families & visitors. The values are modeled and reinforced by all school staff throughout the school day. They are shown throughout our physical building and in our programming.   Our school community has been trained and follows the principles of Safe and Positive Approaches® for Preventing and Responding to Crisis. We use a non- physical approach for both preventing and defusing crises.

RISE is also directly taught in classrooms.  Each class has one RISE period where they are instructed using our Social Emotional Learning curriculum, Second Step®.

At SFDS, we have a PBIS team to support all staff on the implementation of the 3 tiers of intervention for PBIS.
